Preparation
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda until evenly mixed.
- In another bowl, whisk together milk, melted butter, egg, food coloring, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Gradually mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until a soft dough forms. Avoid overmixing.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough into a rectangle (about 10x12 inches), ensuring even thickness.
- Spread softened cream cheese evenly over the dough, leaving a small border along one edge.
- In a small bowl, mix brown sugar, cinnamon, and cocoa powder; sprinkle the mixture over the cream cheese layer.
- Roll up the dough tightly into a log and slice into 8 even rolls.
- Place rolls cut-side up in a greased baking dish, cover, and let them rise for approximately 30 minutes.
Baking
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake rolls for 20-25 minutes until golden and set.
- For the glaze, mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth, then drizzle over warm rolls.
Notes
Avoid overmixing the dough to prevent tough rolls, and ensure you let the dough rest for better texture. Store cooled rolls properly to maintain freshness.
